Contribution in technical report
Executive summary This report responds to the letter of authorization which calls for a proposal to research on a more effective drivetrain for Electric Vehicles (EVs). The research was done on automotive mechanics and the solution will highlight the benefits of integrating continuously variable transmissions with electric motors. Our goal is for Polestar’s R&D department to adopt this technology in their future electric vehicles. The motivation behind our research into more efficient drivetrains was fuelled by the inefficiency of direct drive transmissions in electric vehicles. Direct drive systems result in high battery usage and excessive motor wear, causing uneconomical maintenance fees in the long run. To tackle these issues, our solution, Dual Variable Transmission for Electric Vehicles (DVTEV) will be an integration of two continuously variable transmission belts with an electric motor. The combination of these two systems allows for a higher range and reduction in motor
